What is Order Comms?

Order Comms is an abbreviation for Order Communications Systems (OCS). It is an electronic system that allows diagnostic tests (pathology and radiology) to be ordered instantly. It eliminates the delays, bottlenecks and errors of paper-based systems.

The System of Choice

Sunquest ICE (Integrated Clinical Environment) system is an established web-based service installed in more than 60% of Acute NHS Trusts and accessed by more than 5'000 GP practices. Sunquest ICE allows clinical requests to be made from wards, clinics and GP surgeries, offering full tracking from the point of request. It also includes a feature that allows GPs to view details from pathological investigations carried out on their patients whilst under our care (e.g. inpatient results).

How does the requesting process work?

    • The electronic requesting software (ICE) will be accessed through the Portal.  When a patient requires a Pathology or Radiology test, the Clinician will launch the ICE system and select the investigation(s) that he/she requires to be conducted.

    • Once the order has been completed, an order message is sent to Pathology or Radiology where it is visible as an incoming request.  At the same time a request label is printed and attached to any sample that has been taken. This is collected and sent to the  Pathology department. In Radiology the request populates an orders page in the Clinical Radiology Information System (CRIS).

    • The status of  a request can be tracked (Requested, Being Processed, Resulted)

    • Once  results data is available this is pushed to results viewers

Benefits

The move from paper based to electronic requesting will increase efficiency of requests getting to:

    • the Radiology CRIS system from acute and primary care. Mobile devices will allow better access to Radiology systems when near the patient

    • the Pathology laboratory system from acute care. It will also improve the quality of phlebotomy samples as collection details are recorded and tube labels will be printed at time of collection

    • will prevent the loss/delay of paper requests and eliminate manual transcription errors.

    • will offer the ability to view the status of the request.

In addition:

    • Mobile devices will allow easier requesting and sample collection in A&E and on the wards
